The NFL kicked off its preseason games on Thursday and quickly dished out a reminder of how cruel the sport can be. New England Patriots wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell, who was impressive early on, suffered an elbow injury that immediately forced him to leave the game and head into the locker room.

Replay of the injury showed Mitchell's elbow bent backwards, the way no elbow is meant to bend. He was in obvius, agonizing pain. It's a brutal blow given how well Mitchell was already performing. It looks like a serious injury, though we won't know more until later.

We'll provide further updates when more information becomes available.
