Gagner OT goal lifts Canucks past Sharks
VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Sam Gagner scored with 25.7 seconds left in overtime as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the San Jose Sharks 4-3 Friday night.
Gagner took a pass from Alex Edler and scored on a backhander to snap a four-game Vancouver losing streak.
Defenseman Brent Burns tied the game 3-3 at 14:11 of the third with his second goal of the night. He took a shot from the blue line that deflected off the skate of Vancouver defenseman Alex Biega and through goaltender Jacob Markstrom's legs. Joel Ward earned an assist on the play for his 300th point in his 700th career game.
Markus Granlund scored twice for the Canucks.
Brock Boeser also scored for Vancouver (15-14-4). Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin had three assists each.
It was Vancouver's first win at home over San Jose in almost six years. The Canucks had lost 11 straight games (0-9-2) at Rogers Arena to the Sharks.
Marcus Sorensen scored the other goal for the Sharks (17-10-4).
Markstrom made 35 saves. Sharks goalie Martin Jones stopped 36 shots.
Vancouver outshot San Jose 22-13 in the first period to build a 2-1 lead.
The game was just 44 seconds old when Granlund scored on a power play, deflecting a Daniel Sedin shot past Jones.
Burns tied the game on a San Jose power play at 10:45. He took a shot from just inside the blue line that a screened Markstrom didn't see.
Granlund put the Canucks ahead 2-1 at 14:27 just seconds after the Sharks killed off a penalty. Jones stopped a Daniel Sedin shot but Henrik Sedin collected the rebound and fed it to Granlund, who scored his sixth of the season.
The teams exchanged second-period goals.
Boeser scored on the power play at 11:56. He took a pass from Daniel Sedin and fired a shot from the faceoff circle over Jones' shoulder. It was the rookie's 17th goal of the season and came just nine seconds after he had hit the post on a breakaway.
Sorensen got the Sharks back to within one with just 1:44 left in the period. Justin Braun took a shot from the slot that Markstrom stopped but Sorensen was able to deflect home the rebound.
