PGATour.com is reporting that Adam Scott and his caddy Steve Williams are ending their very successful partnership.
Williams has been a valuable asset to Scott, since joining him in the summer of 2011, after being fired by Tiger Woods. Scott won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the 2013 Masters with Stevie on the bag. He also added the 2013 Barclays and ascended to the No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Williams was Woods’ caddy for 13 of his 14 major championships. He also did stints toting for Greg Norman and Raymond Floyd. He began his career at the age of 13, when he caddied for five-time Open Champion Peter Thompson in New Zealand.
Scott was seen as an underachiever until Williams brought his intense no-nonsense style of golf to the Aussie.
Perhaps Williams’ greatest asset as a caddy is demanding the absolute best from his player at all times. Whether in the gym or on the course, he raises the expectations of the player and wills him to succeed through hard work and focus.
Williams can be candid with his remarks and has had brushes with the media, but in the end he is a player’s coach, confessor, trainer and best friend.
Now at the age of 50, Williams announced earlier this year that he wanted to curtail his busy schedule. Scott is still at the prime of his career and needs a caddy that is still motivated to travel the world.
Their split was a mutual decision and helps avoid a melancholy victory lap for Williams that would divert attention away from Scott.
Steve Williams was recently inducted into the Caddy Hall of Fame and could soon find a spot in the World Golf Hall of Fame.
In an interview with World Golf Foundation CEO Steve Mona on the September 9th Back 9 Report, he said the World Golf Hall of Fame has discussed nominating caddies in the past for induction.
Steve Williams is one of the best caddy’s that has ever hoisted a golf bag and walked a fairway.
A bust in the World Golf Hall of Fame may be in his future.
I wonder if Tiger Woods will do his induction speech?
