Korean-teenager Kyu Jung Baek, 19-year-old member of the Korean Ladies Professional Golf Tour, won the KEB-HanaBank Championship in her first LPGA Tour start.
Baek began the final round tied with fellow country-woman Hee Kyung Bae for the top spot. She posted a final round five-under-par 67 and finished tied with Brittany Lincicome and In Gee Chung at 10-under-par.
Baek played the final round paired with two other Korean women, No. 2 ranked, Inbee Park and Hee Kyung Bae. She said, even though she was leading, nerves were not an issue,
“I have to say, the nerves didn't hit me then and I'm used to playing with Inbee and Hee-Kyung, so I actually started off this round very comfortably and I was actually looking forward to a really exciting day.”
With one bogey and one birdie, she was even par on the front nine, but reeled off five consecutive birdies on Nos. 11-15 to post a five-under-par 31 on the back side.
Baek over-achieved on her goal to finish inside the top-five at the beginning of the week. In her post-round press interview, she said,
“So going into the final nine, my goal was to come into the top-five and so I really concentrated on every hole and I started making birdies. It all started to kind of work for me from then on.”
Both Lincicome and Chung were one shot behind Baek after 54 holes and both fired matching six-under-par 66 to catch the leader and force a playoff.
All three players returned to the 18th tee for the first hole of the playoff. Lincicome and Chung only managed pars, but the teenager put a hasty end to the playoff with a birdie at the par-5 to collect her first LPGA Tour title.
It seems the LPGA Tour has identified yet another teenager to challenge, Lydia Ko, Lexi Thompson, Minjee Lee and Charley Hull for future victories.
