The Back 9 Report radio show, hosted by eDraft.com, discussed the end of the golf season on Tuesday evening, with the LPGA and PGA Tours both in Mexico this week. The PGA Tour is holding its last official event of the 2014-15 wrap-around-season with the OHL Classic at Mayakoba.
Hall of Famer Lorena Ochoa is hosting an elite field of the top names in women’s golf mixed with a few Mexican golf stars for her Lorena Ochoa Invitational. This is the last LPGA Tour event prior to the CME Group Tour Championship, which will decide Player of the Year and the winner of the $1 million bonus that goes to the Race to the CME Globe.
The European Tour visits the Montgomerie Maxx Royal Golf Club in Belek, Turkey for the Turkish Airlines Open, the third leg of the Race to Dubai Final Series. Rory McIlroy has been AWOL from the Final Series, but he has such a large lead that only Sergio Garcia or Jamie Donaldson has a remote chance of catching McIlroy for the $1.25 million bonus.
Co-Hosts, Carlos Torres and Fred Altvater, both agree that the PGA Tour’s wrap-around schedule is confusing to golf fans. It blurs the true end of the golf season, after the FedEx Cup, Ryder and Presidents Cup competitions.
The extra events in October and November do give lesser-known players and tour rookies a chance to get into a PGA Tour tournament field and earn valuable prize money and FedEx Cup points.
Most of the big names get an early start to their holiday vacations or jet off to Asia or Australia for lucrative appearance fees.
As professional golfers ‘follow the sun’ and prize money, the golf season has grown and spans every month of the calendar.
Constant travel and the stress to golfer’s bodies is evident in the rash of injury related problems associated with professional golfers.
