The old guys resumed play this week in the inaugural Greater Gwinnett Championship over TPC Sugarloaf Country Club near Atlanta, Georgia.
Bart Bryant and David Frost are at four-under par and tied for the lead. Only 24 of the 80 players completed their rounds on Friday as heavy thunder storms in the Atlanta area prevented any play until 3:00 PM EST. Frost still has five holes remaining in his first round.
Duffy Waldorf and Neal Lancaster both got all 18 holes in yesterday and are one shot back at three-under par. John Cook won the first Champions Tour event of the year in Hawaii and is also at three-under par with three holes left in his first round.
Former Masters Champions, Bernhard Langer, Freddie Couples and Sandy Lyle are in the field this week. All three acquitted themselves quite well at Augusta National last week.
The Champions Tour has had five different winners thus far in 2013. John Cook, Rocco Mediate, Bernhard Langer, David Frost and Michael Allen have won the first five tournaments this year.
TPC Sugarloaf was Greg Norman’s first design inside the United States and opened in 1997. The course can be stretched to 7,200 yards and features rolling terrain, traversed by small streams and tall majestic pines. The course hosted the BellSouth Classic and AT&T Classic on the PGA Tour from 1997 to 2008.
Bernhard Langer leads the Charles Schwab Cup Standings but John Cook, Rocco Mediate and David Frost are looking to gain ground for the $1 million bonus.
The Greater Gwinnett Championship is a 54-hole event and offers a total purse of $1.8 million. It will provide a true challenge for Champions Tour players this week.
It can be viewed on the Golf Channel Friday, April 19, 12:30-2:30 PM EST. It will air on CBS over the weekend at 3:00-6:00 PM EST.
