Billy Horschel picked up the biggest check of his short career at the BMW Championship on Sunday. He collected $1.44 million from the $8 million purse, but more importantly he moved to No. 2 in the FedEx Cup points list heading to the season-ending Tour Championship.
Chris Kirk leads the points list, but Horschel, Bubba Watson, Rory McIlroy or Hunter Mahan are assured the big check and FedEx Cup silver trophy if they win at East Lake next week.
Horschel won last year at the Zurich Classic. He finished inside the top -10 on four occasions this year and began the FedEx Cup playoffs at No. 23 in the points list.
Putting had been an issue for Horschel all season, but he found the greens at Cherry Hills much to his liking and made putts from everywhere.
Kirk won the Deutsche Bank Championship and Hunter Mahan won at The Barclays. Watson had a good year winning his second Masters and Rory McIlroy was ranked No. 1 in the FedEx Cup after his consecutive wins at the Open Championship, WGC-Bridgestone and the PGA Championship.
Morgan Hoffman made the most fireworks at Cherry Hills in the BMW Championship last week. After successive even-par 70’s on Thursday and Friday, he fired an eight-under-par 62 on Saturday to zoom up the leaderboard.
He followed up his spectacular third round with a seven-under-par 63 on Sunday to finish third. He moved up from No. 68 in the FedEx Cup to No. 21 and will be playing this week in Atlanta.
Bubba Watson was runner-up with Jim Furyk, Rickie Fowler, Sergio Garcia and Ryan Palmer all finishing tied for fourth.
Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth rounded out the top-10.
If McIlroy could have refrained from taking eight putts in two days at the par-4 No. 12, he would have finished much higher. He took four putts at No. 12 on both Saturday and Sunday.
It has been an exciting season on the PGA Tour and it all comes to an end next week.
Not to worry golf fans, the Ryder Cup is only two weeks away and the 2014-2015 wrap-around-season begins October, 9, at the Frys.com Open.
