Boo Weekley Wins the Crowne Plaza Invitational

Thomas Brent “Boo” Weekley got his third career PGA Tour win and his first win in five years. Weekley is the good ole boy who would rather be fishin’ and huntin’ than hanging around plush country clubs. His sponsors include Mossy Oak and Bass Pro Shops.

He grew up in the panhandle of Florida in the little town of Milton, the same area that produced Heath Slocum and Bubba Watson.

His other two wins came in 2007 and 2008 at Hilton Head. Both Harbour Town and Colonial require accurate ball striking to navigate tight fairways.

Weekley has had injuries that hampered his playing time over the past couple years. Finally healthy, he is getting back to the form that made him one of the best players on tour for several years.

This was Weekley’s fourth top-10 finish this year and his $2.2 million in earnings jumps him up to the sixth spot in the FedEx Cup Rankings.

Matt Kuchar had led the Crowne Plaza after the second and third rounds. He posted four rounds in the 60’s on the difficult Colonial Golf Club. Kuchar played well in the final round shooting two-under par, 68, but Weekley fired a final round 66 and nipped him by one shot.

For Kuchar it was his fifth top-10 in 13 starts this year and he will move into third spot on the FedEx Cup Rankings.

The winner here two of the last three years, Zach Johnson turned in another excellent performance at Colonial and finished in third two shots behind Weekley.

Local boy, 19-year-old, Jordan Spieth finished at 10-under par four shots back of the leader. His score was good enough for T-7 and another big check for the rookie.

Spieth was the No. 1 ranked amateur in the world in 2012 and a member of the Texas golf team when he decided to turn professional in December last year. He earned temporary status on the PGA Tour in March and is looking to become a full member of the tour.

The PGA Tour moves to Columbus, Ohio for the Memorial Tournament, hosted by Jack Nicklaus, at Muirfield Village Golf Club next week.

Both, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, are in the field this week at the Memorial.
