Bubba Watson had not won on the PGA Tour since the 2012 Masters, but he remedied that situation at the 2014 Northern Trust Open in Los Angeles.
Watson shot 70-71 in the first two rounds and was just inside the cut line Friday night. A matching pair of seven-under 64’s on Saturday and Sunday got him to 15-under par and gave him a two-shot win over Dustin Johnson.
Watson shot five-under par 30 on the front nine on Sunday and birdies at Nos. 11 and 18 on the homeward nine sealed the deal. He had three runner-up finishes in 2013 and finished second to Kevin Stadler at the Waste Management Phoenix Open two weeks ago.
Johnson posted 69-70-69-66 for a total of 13-under par for the four rounds. It was his second consecutive runner-up finish and fourth Top 10 in his four starts this season.
Johnson won the first event of the year at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii and will move into second place behind Jimmy Walker in the FedEx Cup standings.
Riviera demands accuracy off the tee and precision iron shots to a collection of the smallest greens on tour. Watson leads the PGA Tour in driving distance at 322 yards and is No. 13 in greens-in-regulation. That is the combination he used to win at Riviera this week.
Jason Allred and Brian Harman tied for third at 12-under par. Char Schwartzel had his best finish on the PGA Tour for some time and finished solo fifth.
Harris English added another top-10 finish to his resume. He only had four top-10’s in 2013 and already has five top-10 finishes through his first nine starts this year.
Jordan Spieth had another strong week finishing T-12. Justin Rose, in just his first start of the season, made the cut and finished T-45 at one-under par.
Who needs, Tiger, Phil or Rory, when you have Bubba, DJ, Charl and Jordan? The talent pool on the PGA Tour runs very deep.
Riviera Country Club proved once again that it can stand up to the bombers of today and bring the best golfers to the top of the leaderboard on Sunday.
