Bubba Watson Leads But Phil Mickelson and a Host of Big Names Miss Masters Cut

It will be the first time for over 20 years that neither Phil Mickelson nor Tiger Woods will play on the weekend at the Masters. Woods was forced to withdraw last week after having back surgery.

Mickelson posted rounds of 76-73 for a two-day total of five-over par and finished one shot outside the cutline. He has yet to post a top-10 finish in his nine starts this season.

Over the past 17 Masters Tournaments Mickelson and Woods have combined for seven titles.

Bubba Watson began his second round at three-under par and one stroke behind leader Bill Haas and turned in the best round of the day.

He turned the front nine in even-par 36, made pars at Nos. 10 and 11 and then ran off a string of five consecutive birdies at Nos. 12-16 to take the outright lead at eight-under par.

He nearly holed his tee shot at the par-3 No. 16 and his only hiccup was a bogey at the last hole for a back nine of four-under par 32.

Watson’s second round 68 left him three shots clear of Aussie John Senden, who posted his own four-under 68 to claim solo second place.

Thomas Bjorn, Jonas Blixt, Adam Scott and Jordan Spieth are tied for third at three-under par. Scott is trying to become only the fourth player to win successive green jackets.

2013 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Spieth is playing in his first Masters and is in a perfect position to make a run on the weekend.

A pair of veterans, Fred Couples and Jim Furyk, are tied with Jimmy Walker one more shot back at two-under par.

Even though Couples is 54 years old, he seems to find the fountain of youth at Augusta National. Furyk at 43 years of age is seeking his second major title.

Walker has been the hottest golfer on tour this season with three wins and leads the FedEx Cup standings.

Other names of interest, Lee Westwood, Matt Kuchar and Brandt Snedeker are tied at even par. Henrik Stenson is at one-over par along with Mike Weir and K.J. Choi.

Another Champions Tour player, Bernhard Langer is at two-over par and will play on the weekend. 1988 Masters Champion, 56-year-old Sandy Lyle shot 76-72 and at four-over par is just inside the cutline.

Continuing with the seasoned veteran theme, Darren Clarke, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Jose Maria Olazabal made the cut on the number and will get two more trips around hallowed Augusta National.

Two of the pre-tournament favorites, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day both struggled, but at four-over par will play on the weekend.

One of the more bizarre rounds of the day was posted by Marc Leishman. He began his round with birdies on the first three holes to get to five-under par for the tournament and hold the outright lead. He then carded two double-bogeys and six bogeys over the final 15 holes to post a seven-over par 79 and miss the 36-hole cut.

Sergio Garcia, Luke Donald, Victor Dubuisson, Ernie Els, Webb Simpson, Charl Schwartzel, Harris English, Graeme McDowell and Dustin Johnson are licking their wounds and taking early flights home after missing the cut.
