Champions Tour Moves to California for the Toshiba Classic

After nearly a month respite the Champions Tour resumes play in Newport Beach, California for the Toshiba Classic. The Toshiba Classic was first played in 1995 with George Archer getting the win.

It offers a total purse of $1.75 million with $262,500 going to the winner. The Toshiba Classic raised $1 million for local charity in 2013 and has raised over $15 million through its history.

Past winners include Bob Murphy, Hale Irwin, Jay Haas, Bernhard Langer, Fred Couples and Nick Price.

Loren Roberts shot 66-70-69 for a total of eight-under par and won the 2012 Toshiba Classic by two shots over Tom Kite, Bernhard Langer and Mark Calcavecchia.

Roberts, always known as one of the best putters on tour, won eight career PGA Tour titles and has won a total of 13 events on the Champions Tour.

In 1999 Gary McCord won the Toshiba Classic on the fifth hole of a playoff with Allen Doyle, John Jacobs and Al “No. 59” Geiberger.

With a runner-up finish here last year and coming off a win at the last Champions Tour stop, the ACE Group Classic in Naples, Florida, Langer has to be the favorite to win this week.

In three Champions Tour starts thus far in 2013 Langer was third in Hawaii, runner-up in Boca Raton and got the win in Naples.

He currently leads the Charles Schwab Cup Rankings and could take a commanding lead with another win.

Langer was runner-up to Tom Lehman in the 2012 Charles Schwab Cup race and it appears that he is determined to rectify that mistake this year.

John Cook won the first Champions Tour event of the 2013 season, the Mitsubishi Electric Championship, in Hawaii and is second in the Charles Schwab Cup Rankings.

Rocco Mediate, who just turned 50 and joined the Champions Tour, won his first event, the Allianz Championship at Boca Raton, Florida. Mediate is currently third in the Charles Schwab Cup chase.
