The PGA Tour is taking a break this weekend. The FedEx Cup playoffs do not resume until next week with the BMW Championship. The LPGA Tour also has the week off as the ladies travel to Europe and prepare for their last major championship of the year at the Evian Championship.
Never fear, however, there will be great golf drama this week at the second leg of the Web.com Tour Finals in Davidson, North Carolina.
This is the first year for the Web.com Tour Finals a FedEx Cup style series that will award 25 PGA Tour Cards over the four tournaments.
PGA Tour players that ended the season ranked Nos. 126-200 and missed the FedEx Cup playoffs are invited to join the top-75 money earners from the Web.com Tour for the Web.com Tour Finals.
There will not be a PGA Tour Q-School this year as all 50 tour cards for 2014 are awarded through the Web.com Tour. PGA Tour cards were issued to The 25 at the conclusion of the Cox Classic the last regular Web.com Tour event.
The additional 25 tour cards that will be issued at the end of the Web.com Tour Finals is the last chance to earn 2014 PGA Tour playing privileges.
Trevor Immelman collected his first win since the 2008 Masters last week at the Hotel Fitness Championship. The win will assure him a job for next season. He has struggled with injuries and with his five-year exemption expired, he was forced to play the Web.com Tour Finals to regain a spot on tour.
Patrick Cantlay finished runner-up to Immelman at the Hotel Fitness Championship and should be assured of receiving his 2014 PGA Tour card. Cantlay was ranked No. 1 on the Web.com Tour early in the season but back issues forced him to miss a substantial portion of the year. He eventually fell outside The 25 and the Web.com Tour Finals provided the chance he needed to earn a tour card.
Although Immelman and Cantlay have earned their tour cards, 148 other hopefuls will be teeing it up at River Run Country Club in Davidson, North Carolina. It will play to a par-72 and 7,200 yards.
Golf Channel will provide live coverage of the Chiquita Classic 3:00-6:00 PM ET on both Thursday, Sep. 5 and Friday, Sep. 6. If you failed to set your DVR the first two rounds will be replayed 10:30-12:30 PM ET both days.
Golf Channel will also air the tournament on the weekend. The third and fourth rounds will be shown on both Saturday and Sunday, Sep. 7-8 at 1:30-4 PM ET.
Veterans fighting to keep their jobs for one more season versus youngsters trying to reach the bright lights and big purses of the PGA Tour offer great golf viewing this weekend.
