Luke Donald held the No. 1 world ranking for 56 weeks throughout 2011 and 2012. Rory McIlroy held the No. 1 spot for a couple of weeks after his win at the Honda Classic early in the year but Donald regained the top spot with a win at the Transitions in March.
With his win at the PGA Championship Rory McIlroy has jumped back to NO. 1 on the Official World Golf Ranking and pushed Luke back to the second position.
Even though Donald has been the most consistent golfer in the world over the past 2.5 years, his play thus far in 2012 has been somewhat of a mystery. Donald has had six top 10 finishes in 13 starts on the PGA Tour this year to go with his win, but his play in the majors has been less than stellar.
He was T-32 at the Masters and missed the cut at the U. S. Open. He did manage a T-5 at the Open Championship but struggled throughout the week. He was never a factor at the PGA Championship and ended up T-32.
Donald was focused on winning major titles and his year has been a disappointment thus far. Golf can be a cruel game even for its best players. Winning golf tournaments, especially major events is a difficult proposition.
Luke enters the FedEx Cup Playoffs ranked NO. 16. The Playoffs demand consistent play over the four weeks.
Would a FedEx Cup offset a major championship? No, but $10 million would certainly ease the pain of being the best golfer without a major title.
Much more was expected from the player that won four events worldwide and the money titles on both the PGA and the European Tours last year.
