Final Thoughts on 2013 Soheim Cup

The 2013 Solheim Cup is in the books with the European Team thumping Team USA by a commanding 18-10 margin.

The European Team included six Solheim Cup rookies including 17-year-old Charley Hull, who has yet to record a win on any professional tour. The Americans had won eight of the 12 previous Solheim Cup matches and had never lost at home.

No one gave the Europeans a chance to win their second consecutive Solheim Cup, especially in Colorado.

There was controversy, there was emotion and most of all there was great golf played in every match.

The Europeans proved to everyone that they could compete against the best that the LPGA has to offer. The women’s game is now global and many of the Europeans compete regularly in the United States. The different types of courses, accommodations and the effect of travel has been negated by routine and familiarity.

Liselotte Neumann told her team to enjoy the moment and play for history. Her team performed magnificently throughout the matches. They played with a calm confidence and a purpose.

The Americans seemed overcome with the pressure of too much expectation from the golf world. Putts would not fall, iron shots barely missed their target and tee balls found difficult lies in the rough.

American Vice-Captain Dottie Pepper, who was a standout Solheim Cup performer posted an article in ESPNW about what needs fixing in the Solheim Cup. I am not too sure anything needs fixing.

As was discussed on the Back 9 Report, the Solheim Cup delivered suspense, controversy and great golf. It let Cinderella once again reappear and take center stage.

Young players were identified for future greatness and veterans were left scratching their heads.

The 2013 Soheim Cup has shown that Europe can do more than just compete. They can dominate.

It left golf fans looking forward to the drama and excitement of the next Soheim Cup to be held in Germany in two years.

What more can you ask from a team golf competition?
