Forest Dunes To Build Second 18-Hole Golf Course By Tom Doak

Forest Dunes is recognized as one of the premier golf destinations not only in Michigan, but also in the nation. It announced to its membership on July 18 that it contracted world-famous golf architect, Tom Doak to design a second 18-hole golf course on the property.

Forest Dunes doesn’t offer stunning coastline views, a casino, spa or exciting nightlife opportunities, unless you consider a peaceful rural setting surrounded by tall pines and crickets chirping exciting.

What is does offer is a first-class golf facility with a challenging yet playable golf course, outstanding dining experience and comfortable accommodations.

It is first and foremost a golf facility.

Forest Dunes General Manager, Todd Campbell explained,

“When I first came to this property in 2012, I felt we needed to exploit the things that we do well and that is provide a first-class golf experience.”

Tom Weiskopf designed the original 18-hole course and it opened for play in 2002. It offers a challenge for the scratch golfer and is enjoyable for the high handicapper, as well.

He routed the front nine through the thick pine forest and the back nine traverses sand dunes and uses much of the natural surroundings.

It is definitely one of his best works.

The current owners of Forest Dunes took over in late 2011 and have made drastic changes to the property. The Lake Au Sable Lodge opened last year and allows the course to offer affordable stay-and-play packages.

The restaurant will suit even the most discernable taste and the clubhouse sits beautifully among the majestic pines that litter the property.

Man does not live by golf alone and Lake Au Sable offers a place to relax on a sandy beach or take a dip in the secluded lake.

If you are in the market for a second home or maybe that perfect retirement spot, home sites are available and can fit every budget.

Doak is one of the most sought after golf course designers in the world and makes his home in Michigan. He is best known for Pacific Dunes and Old MacDonald at Bandon Dunes in Oregon.

He also collaborated with Jack Nicklaus on Sebonack on Long Island, New York. It hosted the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open and fits perfectly with its neighbors, The National Golf Links and Shinnecock Hills.

Doak will use the natural sandy terrain to design a member-friendly golf course that will test the best golfers, as well as, allow the high handicapper to play an enjoyable round of golf.

Future expansion is also on the drawing board for Forest Dunes and may include a par-3 or short course.

If you find yourself traveling north through the center of Michigan on I-75, Forest Dunes is just a few minutes off the highway at Roscommon, Michigan.

With the addition of the second 18-hole golf course, Forest Dunes will become one of the premier golf destinations in the country.

Do yourself a favor and check out this beautiful golf facility, before every other golfer in the world gets there first.
