Adam Scott, Justin Rose and Jason Dufner permanently removed their names from the “best player to never win a major” list last season.
Here are a few other golfers that need major titles in 2014 to complete their careers.
Tiger Woods won five tournaments in 2013, but failed to win a major for the fifth consecutive year. His concern for 2014 is a major one.
Woods turned 38-years-old at the end of December and still needs five more major championships to pass Jack Nicklaus.
Surgically repaired knees and other injuries that limited his play last year are a constant reminder that “Father Time” waits for no one and his time is growing short to reach his career goal of 19 major victories.
Phil Mickelson had one of his best years in 2013. He won the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the Scottish Open and even added another major championship at the Open Championship in July.
He is five years older than Woods and with his win at the Open Championship last year only needs a U.S. Open trophy to complete a career Grand Slam.
Mickelson appears to be in great physical shape, but has arthritis issues that he must deal with. He has had a great career and has had six runners-up finishes in past U.S. Opens, including the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst, the site of this year’s tournament.
Will he be able to continue to manage his arthritis and finally win a U.S. Open title?
Henrik Stenson became the first golfer to win the FedEx Cup and the Race to Dubai in the same season in 2013. He dominated golf at the end of the season last year and reached No. 3 on the world rankings.
Coming from outside the top-200 in the world in early 2012, Stenson engineered one of the best improvements in golf history. Only one big hurdle remains for the stoic swede. Can he win a major championship?
Lee Westwood has 38 professional wins including 22 European Tour victories and two PGA Tour wins, but has yet to win a major.
He has finished inside the top-10 in ten of the last 20 major championships. He definitely does not want to end up like fellow Englishman, Colin Montgomerie with zero major titles for his career.
Sergio Garcia has been close to winning majors with runners-up in the 2007 Open Championship and the 1999 and 2008 PGA Championships. He also posted a third-place finish in the 2005 U.S. Open and a fourth in the 2004 Masters.
Missed chances in majors have left some deep scars in Garcia’s psyche. He has quietly climbed back into the top-10 in the world rankings and is playing some of his best golf of late.
Can this be the year he gets at least one major championship?
