U.S. Ryder Cup Captain, Tom Watson said he is looking for guys with fire in the belly and desire to compete in the Ryder Cup. A hot putter wouldn’t hurt either.
Hunter Mahan was way down the Ryder Cup points standings and was not on the short list for one of the three captain’s picks for the team, but he changed all of that on Sunday at The Barclays.
Mahan seized the moment on the back nine of Ridgewood Country Club and wielded a red-hot putter on Sunday to make five birdies, shoot a final round 65 and secure the two-shot win. He is No. 1 in the FedEx Cup race and moved to the front of the line in the race for a captain’s pick.
Mahan has had a great career and has won over $27 million in career prize money. He is married to a former Dallas Mavericks dancer and Cowboys cheerleader and is one of the infamous “Golf Boys” along with buddies, Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler and Ben Crane.
He also carries around the burden of being the guy who flubbed the chip-shot that allowed Graeme McDowell to hole the winning putt for the Europeans at the 2010 Ryder Cup at Cletic Manor.
Mahan missed the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah, after he had two wins early in the year, but his game went sideways through the summer and he fell out of the Ryder Cup picture.
He has assured that won’t happen this year. Mahan has a game that can match up with anyone of several players on the Ryder Cup team and his prowess with his putter last week has to make him a favorite for one of Watson’s picks.
