I don’t know about you, but I’ve quickly gotten very tired of all the talk about how, all of a sudden Rory and Tiger are rivals.
I simply do not think it’s faire to saddle Rory with a fading superstar just because he amassed a bunch of points by “sleep walking” to those wins early.
Rory’s career is at its inception. It’s been a great beginning, but he’s still barely in his relative career adolescence.
We all know about Tiger’s career highs and lows, both on the course, off the course, and personally. He is in the autumn of his career that has caused much of his inconsistencies.
Tiger was not saddled with anyone when he first hit the scene. Rory deserves the same environment, especially since Rory will still be in the prime of his playing days well into Tiger’s dotage.
I believe that ever since Tiger hit the scene, the golf media has desperately wanted a serious rival. It never happened. Anyone who could have seriously challenged Tiger had other aspects of their lives which were more important than succumbing to the “mano e’ mano” of a rivalry.
Rory has plenty of natural rivals, but he seems to be more interested in acting his age, enjoying the camaraderie of others his age, and learning from those around him willing to be friend and mentor like Graeme MacDowell.
Quite frankly, I don’t hear anything that lends me to believe that any of the wonderful young men on either Tours these days, are interested in a rivalry. Today, players want to play when and where they want, and seem to spurn efforts to force them to play week-in and week-out like the days of old. They are considerate of their families and personal lives. I like that very, very much.
There’s no reason to split the golf public into factions. Let’s let Rory be Rory and Tiger be Tiger and enjoy what they both have to contribute to golf.
