Joost Luiten, a 27-year-old native of The Netherlands, took the lead on the 36-hole mark at the Lyoness Open powered by Greenfinity and never looked back, earning his second European Tour International schedule victory following up his debut victory in the Iskandar Johor Open in 2011.
He closed the deal on Sunday, holding off playing challenges from Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn and China’s Wen-Chong Liang, and keeping his cool after a lengthy weather delay. Luiten was on the 14th tee when the threat of lightning forced a one hour break in play.
Luiten carded a final round 71, his highest score of the week, but it was good enough for a two-stroke victory finishing at 17-under par total of 271. Luiten dropped a shot at the opening hole but immediately amended it with a birdie at the second, finishing with a birdie and two solid pars.
Bjorn fired a 64 on Saturday and was five shots behind Luiten at the start of the day. He shot a 68 on Sunday and finished second at 15-under after he made birdie at the 18th hole.
Liang, who had the day’s lowest round (six-under), Liang, started the day eight shots off the pace, but fired the final round’s lowest score with a six under par 66, featuring seven birdies with the only blemish a bogey at the par three ninth. He finished in a T-3rd with France’s Romain Wattel at 14-under.
Miguel Angel Jimenez, needed a victory to secure his ticket to next week's US Open, but he had to settle for a tie of 19th place after a closing 75.
For Luiten, this win comes in his 119th European Tour event, and has been showing some consistency lately. This win was his third top ten finish of the season, along with his T-6th sixth in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship and T-8th in the Volvo China Open.
This is also his sixth Top 25 finish in his last seven European Tour starts. That gives him a total of €380,329 and moves to 35th in the Race to Dubai and will jump from 137th to 100th in the Official World golf Rankings on Monday.
