Korean Women Dominate Leaderboard at LPGA Lotte Championship

South Korean women golfers have dominated the LPGA Tour over the past few years. Se Ri Pak found success in America in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, winning five major championships and accumulating 22 LPGA Tour wins by 2004. Her efforts encouraged this crop of talented young Korean women to take to the golf course.

Korean women held six of the top-10 spots on the leaderboard after the first round of the LPGA Lotte Championship in Hawaii.

Pak, now 36 years old, has not won a tour event since 2010, but has rejuvenated her game of late. In her last two starts, she finished T-6 at the Kia Classic and T-4 at the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

She is tied for the first-round lead with fellow countrymen, former U.S. Women’s Open Champion, So Yeon Ryu and Hyo Yoo Kim at four-under par.

Three more Korean women, world No. 1, Inbee Park, So Young Lee and Ha Na Jang are tied for fifth with Americans, Michelle Wie and Amy Anderson.

Wie grew up in Hawaii and wants to win for the home folks. Her round included four birdies in the first six holes, but bogeys at Nos. 5 and 8 left her with a two-under par 34 on the first nine. Another bogey at No. 10 was followed by a lone birdie at the par-3 No. 16 to give her an even-par 36 on the back nine for her two-under par 70.

The second round of the LPGA Lotte Championship presented by J Golf continues tonight in prime time on the Golf Channel, 6:30-10:30 PM ET.
