Lee Anne Pace Earns Playoff Win At South African Women's Open

South African Lee Anne Pace birdied the second extra hole in a sudden death play-off against England’s Holly Clyburn on Sunday to earn the victory at the Cell C South African Women's Open played in front of her home crowd at the San Lameer Golf Club in KwaZulu-Natal.

Pace shot a final-round of five-under 67 to finished regulation play tied with Clyburn at five-under-par 211. Considering that the final aggregate for the tournament was five-under, Pace’s final round accomplishment is remarkable.

She tied the tournament low round of 67, shot by Germany’s Leigh Whittaker on Saturday, by playing the last 10 holes at five-under. Pace was playing in the third-to-last group, started her big run by birdieing the par-3 ninth, eagled the par-5 13th, then birdied 16th and 18th to set the clubhouse lead at five-under.

Clyburn had reached five-under after her second birdie of the day came at the par-5 13th. She would then par the remaining five holes to round up her bogey-free final round of 70 and forcing the sudden death playoff.

Both players returned to the 351-yard par-4 18th hole to play their first playoff hole. They each had makeable birdie-putts just inside 10 feet, but neither made it so they had to go back to the 18th tee to try it again.

The second time around, Clyburn’s approach shot found the water short of the green and took her six shots to close the hole. Pace’s second with a wedge landed three feet from the hole, leading to her winning birdie-putt.

The win is Pace's third on the Ladies European Tour and her first since winning twice last year.

France’s Gwladys Nocera finished alone in third place at three-under 213 after shooting a final- round 70. England’s Florentyna Parker (68) and Georgina Simpson (69), France’s Valentine Derrey (71) and Germany’s Ann-Kathrin Lindner (73) ended tied for fourth at two-under 214.

Germany’s Leigh Whittaker finished tied for eighth with Switzerland’s Fabienne In-Albon at one-under to round up the Top 10.
