Lexi Leads at the Navistar LPGA Classic in Alabama

Super teen Lexi Thompson is at it again. She won the 2011 Navistar LPGA Classic at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Senator Course at Prattville, Alabama. She is leading the tournament again this year and looking for her second LPGA title.

Her nine-under par 63 was nearly flawless on Thursday. Lexi hit 17 greens in regulation and was inside five feet on numerous occasions for easy birdie putts.

Lexi hit more fairways and increased her driving distance to 275 yards on Friday but only hit 15 greens and needed 31 putts to post a three-under par 69.

Lexi does have some competition, however, heading into the weekend. There are nine players within three shots of her lead.  Mi Jung Hur and Mindy Kim are only one shot back. Dori Carter, Hee Young Park, and Lizette Salas are two back at 10-under par.

Popular American players Stacy Lewis and Natalie Gulbis are within striking distance at eight-under par.

Alexis Thompson is only 17 years old and was given a special exemption by LPGA Tour Commissioner Michael Whan to join the LPGA Tour after her win at the 2011 Navistar LPGA Classic.

She collected her second professional win last December at the Dubai Ladies Masters on the Ladies European Tour.

Although Lexi is second in the LPGA Rookie of the Year race she has not had a spectacular season. With only has two top-10 finishes in 2012, her $310,000 in earnings has her ranked No. 28 on the LPGA money list and No. 25 in the Rolex Rankings.

While most young girls her age are scanning fashion magazines searching for the perfect prom dress Lexi is hitting it long off the tee, striking pure irons and sinking birdie putts.
