Inbee Park will defend her third title of the season at Los Colinas Country Club in Irving, Texas this week. She has not won since winning her third consecutive major championship of the year at the 2013 U.S. Open.
Park is still No. 1 on the Rolex Rankings, but 17-year-old Lydia Ko is gaining on her. Ko won last week at the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic in San Francisco and jumped into the second spot in the world rankings.
Ko is giving the rest of the ladies on the LPGA Tour a break this week and is not entered in the North Texas Shootout.
The North Texas Shootout offers a slightly different format than normal on tour. A tournament is held for top high school players to earn two spots into the field with the professionals and the same courtesy is awarded to college players.
There are also two cuts this week rather than one. The field will be cut to the low 70 and ties after 36 holes on Friday evening. A secondary cut after the third round on Saturday will reduce the field to the top 50 for the final round on Sunday.
The field is loaded with the top women players. In addition to world No. 1, Inbee Park, No. 3 Stacy Lewis, No. 4 Suzann Pettersen and No. 6 Lexi Thompson are in the field.
Thompson is making her first start since winnng the first major championship of the year at the Kraft Nabisco Championship.
No. 13 in the world, Michelle Wie is also in the field and is coming off a win two weeks ago in Hawaii and a T-9 finish last week at the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic. Along with her win, she has five top-10 finishes this season and is No. 3 in the Race to the CME Globe.
The North Texas Shootout can be seen on the Golf Channel, Thursday and Fricay, May 1-2, 12:30-2:30 PM ET, Coverage will continue on Saturday and Sunday, May 3-4, 3:00-6:00 PM ET.
