LPGA Tour Season Winding Down With 2 Events Remaining

The LPGA Tour finished its six-event Asian Swing with the Mizuno Classic last week in Japan. The lady golfers now head to Mexico for the Lorena Ochoa Invitational.

Ochoa only invites the top players in the world and sprinkles in a few sponsors’ exemptions to her annual tournament. Precious points in the Race to the CME Globe are on the line as the top four continue to battle for the $1 million bonus.

Stacy Lewis holds a commanding 900 point lead over Inbee Park on the Race to the CME Globe points list. Lydia Ko is 1,500 points behind Lewis and Michelle Wie is a distant 1,900 points back.

If Lewis struggles the next two weeks at either the Lorena Ochoa Invitational or the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship in Naples, Park or even Ko, could overtake her.

Lewis also holds an edge over Park for the Rolex LPGA Tour Player of the Year. With three wins and 17 top-10 finishes, she is leading Park by 12 points. A first place finish this week would yield 30 points to the winner, but points are doubled for the CME Group Tour Championship next week and the possibilities require a rocket scientist to calculate.

Park is in her third week ranked No. 1 on the Rolex Ranking. She regained the lead while Lewis took some time away from the tour and validated her spot at the top with her third win of the year in Taiwan.

The LPGA Tour has had a very successful season thus far and tour commissioner Michael Whan could not have scripted a better scenario for the conclusion of the 2014 season.

American women returned to the winner’s circle this year and a bevy of young players won on tour. Lexi Thompson won a major at the Kraft Nabisco, Lydia Ko won twice in her rookie season and Michelle Wie is fulfilling the promise golf fans have expected from her.

The top-three ranked players in the world,Park, Lewis and Ko, are battling for women’s top prize, plus U.S. Women’s Open champion Michelle Wie has an outside chance of pocketing the $1 million.

Just like the rest of the 2014 LPGA Tour season, we can’t wait to see what happens over the next two weeks.
