Matt Jones posted a low score on Sunday and took advantage of a bad shot by Matt Kuchar to get into a position to win the Shell Houston Open.
Kuchar had the lead going down the 72nd hole, but for the second consecutive week did not close the deal. He hooked his second shot into the water on the 18th hole, made bogey and finished tied with Matt Jones.
Jones had fired the round of the day and was waiting for the leaders in the clubhouse. He had started the day six shots behind the 54-hole leader Kuchar, but his six-under par 66 left him tied for the lead at 15-under par.
Jones is a 33-year-old professional from Australia and becomes the fourth Aussie to win on tour this year. He has won $6.8 million, but had not notched a win in 155 previous starts.
Sometimes things are just meant to happen. Jones made a long putt to get to 15-under par on the 72nd hole and then his 42-yard chip-in on the first playoff hole was another sign from God that it was just his day.
Blowing leads is an unusual occurrence for Kuchar. He was a perfect 3-0 in playoffs prior to his loss to Jones.
The win moves Jones up to No. 16 on the FedEx Cup standings and to No. 41 in the world. More importantly, he qualifies for the Masters this week at Augusta National.
Kuchar need not feel too bad, he is trending upward heading to Augusta with T-4 at the Valero Texas Open and runner-up at the Shell Houston Open. He is No. 15 in the FedEx Cup and No. 7 in the world.
Sergio Garcia had another good finish with a 13-under par total, which was good for third place. Cameron Tringale earned the fourth spot at 12-under par.
