The Champions Tour finished its regular season with Michael Allen collecting his seventh Champions Tour title and second victory of 2014. By finishing tied for sixth, Bernhard Langer earned enough Charles Schwab Cup points to ensure capturing the $1 million bonus that goes to the leading Charles Schwab Cup points earner.
Allen fired a six-under-par 66 on Sunday to overtake second round leader Marco Dawson and win by a two-stroke margin. Dawson finished solo runner-up and Woody Austin finished third.
The winner began the day with birdies at Nos. 1 and 2. He added four more birdies over the back nine holes to post his bogey-free round.
Allen moves up nine spots to No. 8 in the Charles Schwab Cup.
Tom Pernice Jr. and Scott Hoch both finished at 11-under-par on the TPC San Antonio Golf Course and tied fourth.
The biggest news from the AT&T Championship is that Bernhard Langer with five wins this season, two of them major titles, plus 17 top-10 finishes secured enough points to capture the Charles Schwab Cup prior to the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship next week.
Langer began the week 833 points ahead of Colin Montgomerie and his three-under-par 69 on Sunday left him at 10-under-par for the tournament and tied for sixth with Jay Haas. The 79 points earned this week totals 845 points more than Montgomerie which is too much to overcome even with a win by Monty next week.
Only the top-30 on the Charles Schwab Cup points list are invited to the Charles Schwab Cup Championship next week at Dove Mountain in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Mark O’Meara began the week on the bubble at No. 30 and finished in the same spot. He will be the last man into the field for the season finale next week.
Just missing a chance at a piece of the $2.5 million total purse next week were Duffy Waldorf (31), Rocco Mediate (32) and Miguel Angel Jimenez (33).
Allen collected $292,500 for the win, but Langer is assured of the $1 million bonus from Charles Schwab and still can win $440,000 more with a win next week in Arizona.
