Padraig Harrington is currently ranked No. 324 in the Official World Golf Rankings and finished at No. 188 in the FedEx Cup standings at the end of the season.
He has not won a tournament since the 2008 PGA Championship, but wants to be a member of the Irish Olympic Team in 2016 in Brazil.
Harrington was one of the five vice-captains for Paul McGinley on the European Ryder Cup team that just won convincingly over Tom Watson’s American team at Gleneagles. He was one of the names rumored to be considered for the European team captaincy for the 2016 Ryder Cup to be held at Hazeltine National in Minnesota, but took is name out of the running stating,
“Hopefully one day I’ll put my hat in the ring and hopefully I’ll get the captaincy at some stage. We’ll see about that, but certainly not in 2016. There’s plenty of other good candidates and let’s just leave it up to them.”
Harrington knows he has a long uphill climb to regain the world-class form he has exhibited over his career in winning three major championships. In addition to the 2008 PGA Championship, he also won the 2007 and 2008 Open Championships.
Harrington is currently 43 years old and will be nearing 45 when the 2016 Olympics are held.
He missed nine cuts in 16 starts on the PGA Tour in 2013-14 and his best finish was a T-22 at the Byron Nelson in May.
He has not fared much better on the European Tour this year. His best finish was fourth at the Volvo Champions in January. He only earned €213,000 and is ranked No. 104 in the Race to Dubai.
Harrington has 22 months to move up the rankings and get into position for a spot on the Olympic team, but with Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell and Shane Lowrey ahead of him, it will be a difficult task.
