After an exciting PGA Championship with a weird ending, the PGA Tour invades Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina for the final regular season tournament on the PGA Tour schedule.
The Wyndham Championship is one of the oldest tournaments on tour each year, with the first Greater Greensboro Open won by Sam Snead in in 1938. Snead went on to win this event on eight different occasions, with his last win coming in 1965 at the age of 53.
Patrick Reed won his first PGA Tour title here last year and will defend. He has won twice more since last year. He cashed the big check at the Humana Challenge in January and the WGC-Cadillac at Trump Doral in March of this year. He is currently ranked ninth in the FedEx Cup race and No. 26 in the Official World Golf Rankings.
The field of 156 players will all be vying for a piece of the $5.3 million purse, the $954,000 first-place check and valuable FedEx Cup points going to the winner.
After three consecutive weeks filled with two major championships and the WGC-Bridgestone, many of the big names are taking this week off prior to the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs next week.
In addition to Reed, the headliners this week include, Webb Simpson, Hideki Matsuyama, Brandt Snedeker, Stephen Gallacher, Bill Haas, Francesco Molinari and Matt Every.
Simpson and Snedeker are trying to impress Ryder Cup Captain Tom Watson to be among his three picks for the team. Gallacher has two more weeks to play his way onto the European Team and could make a giant leap with a win at Greensboro this week.
Only the Top 125 on the FedEx Cup standings are invited to the playoffs. Players on the bubble around that magic 125 number will be looking to secure their spot for the lucrative FedEx Cup playoffs.
