PGA Tour Travels South of the Border for the OHL Classic at Mayakoba

The PGA Tour will wrap up its new wrap-around schedule this week with the OHL Classic at Mayakoba. Since 2007 Mayakoba has been held opposite the WGC-Accenture Match Play in February, but this year it stands alone as the last official event of the year.

This will mark the first time that this tournament will offer FedEx Cup points for the 2014 season. 132 players are in the field this week, including 63 former PGA Tour winners and 12 major champions.

Veterans Len Mattice, Tad Ridings and Tim Petrovic along with Jay McCluen got into the tournament via Monday qualifying. McGladrey Classic runners-up, Tim Clark and Briny Baird will both be in the field in Mexico.

Although most of golf’s big names have started their winter vacations some familiar names like, Darren Clarke, Harris English, Davis Love and Camilo Villegas are in the field.

Former Mayakoba champions, Fred Funk, Johnson Wagner, Cameron Beckman, Mark Wilson, Brian Gay and John Huh will also tee it up on Thursday.

The OHL Classic at Mayakoba is played on the 6,987 yard, par-71, El Camaleon course. It was designed by Greg Norman and opened in 2006. El Camaleon Golf Course winds through a dense topical jungle, a mangrove forest and includes holes running along the Carribbean. The Resort at Mayakoba provides every amenity any golfer could ask for.

The total purse has been raised from $3.7 million to $6 million with $1.08 million going to the winner.

The OHL Classic at Mayakoba can be viewed on the Golf Channel all four days, Thursday-Sunday, November 14-17, 2:00-4:30 PM EST.
