Raphael Jacquelin shot a final round 71 to join a three-way playoff with Felipe Aguilar and Max Kieffer.
Scotland’s Marc Warren was in total command of the tournament until four bogeys over his last five holes moved him to four-under par for the week and he missed the playoff by a single shot.
Aguilar from Chile missed the green and made bogey on the third playoff hole and was eliminated from the playoff.
It was a very good finish for the veteran Aguilar, who first joined the European Tour in 2006, but failed to keep his card and was forced to play on the Challenge Tour in 2007. He made it back to the European Tour in 2008 and won the Indonesia Open, his only win on the European Tour.
Kieffer and Jacquelin continued on for six more holes with Jacquelin missing several good birdie opportunities that would have closed out Kieffer.
The nine-hole playoff ties a European Tour record.
23-year-old Max Kieffer is in his rookie season on the European Tour. He had one win on the Challenge Tour in 2012. He finished T-4 in the Nelson Mandela Championship in December for his only other top-10 finish on tour. The runner-up check will move him to No. 37 in the Race to Dubai and he is currently No. 418 in the world.
For Jacquelin, in his 18th year on the European Tour, it was his fourth tour win. His first win came at this same event in 2005. He is ranked No. 146 in the Official World Golf Rankings and moves to No. 24 in the Race to Dubai.
Other players of note in the Open de Espana:
Peter Uihlein from the United States played well the first two rounds posting 70-68, but played poorly on the weekend with two rounds of 74-73 and fell to T-8.
Sergio Garcia finished T-12 with 72-73-70-71, two under-par for the week.
Matteo Manassero finished T-16 at one-under par.
