Ricky Barnes Leads After First Round at the Zurich Classic

A blast from the past, Ricky Barnes has a one-shot lead after the first round at the Zurich Claissic of New Orleans.

Barnes was a highly touted amateur when he turned professional in 2003 and in his 10 years on tour does not have a win.

He shot eight-under par 64 over the 7,300 yard TPC of Louisiana golf course. His round included an eagle-three on the second hole and six birdies over an eight-hole stretch on his back nine.

Barnes has shown flashes of brilliance before in his career the question is will he be able to sustain his strong play for three more rounds.

Former U.S. Open Champion Lucas Glover and Boo Weekley are tied in second place at seven-under par. Both players have had less than successful campaigns over the past two years and are looking to regain their championship form.

Ernie Els and Rickie Fowler are both in a group at five-under par. Neither has had a win since 2012.

Billy Horschel has the longest current-cuts-made streak and is in a great postion to make the cut again this week. He toured the course in five-under par 67 and is T-6.

Keegan Bradley finished at three-under par and is T-31.

It appears that the cut will come around two-under par tomorrow afternoon.

Players with some work to do to make the field for the weekend include: David Toms, Erik Compton, Camilo Villegas, Bubba Watson and Charles Howell III.

14-year-old amateur Tianlang Guan, who received a sponsor’s exemption to play in the Zurich Classic, shot a respectable even-par 72 but will need to make some birdies to make the 36-hole cut.

The Zurich Classic can be seen on the Golf Channel on Friday, 4/26, 3:00-6:00 PM EDT. CBS will provide the coverage on Saturday and Sunday, 4/27-28, 3:00-6:00 PM EDT.
