High winds at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club at Hoylake caused the second round of the Ricoh Women’s Bitish Open to be suspended.

Some players had commenced their rounds when winds topping 50 mph caused balls to move on the greens and made play impossible. The Championship Committee announced that the scores from these abbreviated rounds would be erased and the entire second round would be restarted on Saturday.

The field will be cut to the low 50 and ties, rather than the low 65, after the second round scores are posted.

Play for the third round will start on both the first and tenth tees as the third and fourth rounds will be played on Sunday with no redraw of the groupings after the third round.

Michelle Wie was one of the unfortunate players that had an early tee time on Friday and had started her second round. When play was suspended she answered questions in the media tent and had this to say about the conditions,

“..my ball was barely staying on the tee on 12.  I mean, it was about to fall off.  It was just like wobbling all over the place. When the gusts come over you, literally, almost fell over a couple of times. I saw Cristie almost fell over on her shot.  And especially on the 12th green, the balls were not staying at all. They were rolling, seven, eight feet.”

Royal Liverpool was clearly unplayable and hopefully play can be resumed on Saturday and the last two rounds can be completed on Sunday.
