Rory McIlroy appears to be on track to add a third major title to his resume this week at The Open Championship being held at Royal Liverpool Golf Club.
McIroy posted a third-round four-under-par 68 to go along with a pair of 66’s he carded on Thursday and Friday.
At 16-under-par for 54 holes, he has a six-shot lead over Rickie Fowler, who has fired 69-69-68 and is at 10-under-par.
McIlroy has a history of running away from the field in his two previous major championship wins.
In the 2011 U.S. Open Championship at Congressional, he finished at 16-under-par for the week and beat runner-up Jason Day by eight shots.
One year later at the 2012 PGA Championship on a wind-swept Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, he again won by eight strokes over Englishman David Lynn.
After his successful 2012 campaign winning the money titles on both the PGA and European Tours, he signed a huge contract with Nike and switched management companies. He has since changed his management agency again and is still battling legal issues with his former agency.
McIlroy reached the No. 1 spot in the world, but could not sustain his success and has fallen to No. 8 in the world ranking. After zero wins in Europe or America in 2013, he finally won the Australian Open last December.
He still has not won on the PGA Tour since the 2012 BMW Championship in the FedEx Cup playoffs, but did win the BMW PGA Championship in May on the European Tour.
When McIlroy gets it going, no one can stay with him. One more solid round and he will add the third leg of a career grand slam, plus a Claret Jug to his trophy case.
