The Champions Tour is in the middle of a very important stretch of golf. They visit Fox Chapel Golf Club just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania this week for the Constellation Senior Players Championship.
This is the third major championship of the year for the older guys. Kenny Perry won the Tradition in May and Colin Montgomerie won the Senior PGA Championship at the end of May.
Perry is the defending champion this week at the Senior Players Championship. He won the first of his three consecutive senior major titles at this event last year.
In his next start, he won the 2013 U.S. Senior Open Championship in Omaha, Nebraska, which helped him catch Bernhard Langer and win the Charles Schwab Cup at the end of the season. Perry is currently ranked No. 4 in the race for the $1 million bonus this year.
All of the Champions Tour players know the importance of the extra Charles Schwab Cup points available at the major championships and will try to finish high on the leaderboard. With three consecutive major championships over the next five weeks the Charles Schwab Cup could be won or lost.
The total purse this week is $2.7 million with $405,000 going to the winner.
Bernhard Langer is having another stellar season and leads the Charles Schwab Cup points standings. He has two wins and 10 top-10 finishes this season. Langer has not finished outside the top 25 in 11 starts in 2014.
Jay Haas is No. 2 in the Charles Schwab Cup points list and was recently named the captain for the 2015 USA Presidents Cup Team. He does not have a win this year, but has 10 top-10 finishes including one runner-up and five third-place finishes.
He has won 16 Champions Tour events and three senior majors. At 60 years old he is still performing at a very high level.
The Champions Tour will take a week off after this event then head to Oak Tree Country Club in Edmond, Oklahoma for the U.S. Senior Open. After another week respite they head across the Atlantic for the Senior Open Championship at Brigend, Wales.
