Storylines Prior to the Airbus LPGA Classic From Mobile, Alabama

The women of the LPGA move down south to Mobile, Alabama for the Airbus LPGA Classic. It will be held at Magnolia Grove, one of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail resorts courses.

Jennifer Johnson became a first-time winner at this event last year with a record setting 21-under-par performance and is looking to defend her title.

Lizette Salas became the sixth different American-born player to win on the LPGA Tour this season. It was her first ever win on tour and she moved up six spots in the Rolex Rankings and is now No. 10 in the world.

With 24-year-old Salas’ win at the Kingsmill Championship, Karrie Webb is the only player over the age of 30 to win on the LPGA Tour this season. Jessica Korda (21), Paula Creamer (27), Anna Nordqvist (26), Lexi Thompson (19), Michelle Wie (24), Lydia Ko (17) and Stacy Lewis (29) are the other winners this season on the LPGA Tour.

Former world No. 1, Yani Tseng put together four solid rounds of 68-70-68-69 to finish in a tie for second. This was her best performance since finishing runner-up at the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open in February last year.

Lydia Ko and Stacy Lewis could have passed Inbee Park for the No. 1 spot in the Rolex Rankings, but neither lady was able to find the winners circle, so Park is safe for at least one more week.

Ko is taking the week off and not in the field at the Airbus LPGA Classic, but Lewis is a former winner here and wants desperately to regain the top spot she lost to Park last year.

Two more young international players to watch in the field this week in Alabama are 18-year-old Ariya Jutanugarn from Thailand and 18-year-old Charley Hull from England.

The field of 144 lady golfers will contend for the $195,000 first-place check from the total purse of $1.3 million.

Magnolia Grove is a par-72 and plays to 6,521 yards.

The Golf Channel will air the first two rounds on Thursday, May 22 and Friday, May 23, 6:30-9:30 PM ET. Saturday, May 24 and Sunday, May 25, it will air live coverage from 3:00-6:00 PM ET.
