Surprising Names Outside the Top 30 in the FedEx Cup Playoffs

The Top 70 in the FedEx Cup rankings have made it to the BMW Championship. They are competing to make the Top 30 and qualify for the Tour Championship next week at East Lake in Atlanta.

The FedEx Cup and the $10 million first prize await the golfer that finishes No. 1.

There are some surprising names outside the Top 30 and have some work to do this weekend to punch their ticket to Atlanta.

Squarely on the bubble at No. 30 is Lee Westwood. He moved his family to Florida over the winter and has dedicated himself to playing more in the U.S. Thus far his migration has yielded zero wins and he is in danger of missing the Tour Championship.

2012 Master Champion Bubba Watson is ranked No. 40. A T-13 at The Barclays and T-67 at the Deutsche Bank, the first two tournaments in the FedEx Cup playoffs, have dropped him outside the Top 30.

Right behind Bubba at No. 41 is the 2012 BMW Championship winner, Rory McIlroy.

Management changes, a new endorsement deal with Nike, swing changes and girl problems have definitely affected the former world No. 1 this year.

McIlroy began the playoffs ranked No. 49 in the FedEx Cup standings. He finished T-19 at The Barclays and T-47 at the Deutsche Bank Championship.

He posted a 64 in the second round at The Barclays and a 65 in the third round of the Deutsche Bank. Rory will need four solid rounds to qualify for the Tour Championship.

Graeme McDowell is No. 48 and looking to move up. GMac won the RBC Heritage Classic and finished the regular season at No. 28 in the FedEx Cup standings.

He missed the cut at The Barclays and was T-47 at the Deutsche Bank. Eighteen spots is a big move. He will need to finish inside the top-15 to qualify for the Tour Championship.

Ian Poulter is another surprise currently outside the Top 30. After his outstanding performance at the 2012 Ryder Cup everyone expected Poulter to have a monster year.

He only had four top-10 finishes this year and ended the season ranked No. 70 in the FedEx Cup rankings. He missed the cut at The Barclays, but posted a T-9 at the Deutsche Bank and moved up 18 spots to No. 52.

He must finish inside the top-10 to play for the $10 million next week.

One of the biggest surprises this season is the performance or lack thereof from Luke Donald. With only four top-10 finishes during the regular season he finished No. 55 in the FedEx Cup rankings.

He finished T-41 at both The Barclays and the Deutsche Bank and is now No. 54 in the rankings.

He is a member of Conway Farms, the site of the BMW Championship, and was instrumental in bringing the FedEx Cup playoffs to his home course.

Look for Donald to have a great week.

The last man into the field this week was Ernie Els. The year after his Open Championship victory, Els only had one top-10 finish in 2013 and ended the season at No. 82 in the FedEx Cup.

He missed the cut at The Barclays, but his T-20 allowed him to squeak into the Top 70 and qualify for the BMW.

Els needs to finish above T-8 this week to improve 40 spots to make it to Atlanta next week.

With these big names trying to move up and the current Top 30 attempting to maintain their status for next week, the BMW Championship is must viewing for all golf fans.
