Suzann Pettersen had the lead heading into the final round for a rare Saturday finish at the LPGA Lotte Championship. She fired a final round five-under par 67, but had to endure a playoff with Lizette Salas before collecting the trophy.
Salas in her second year on the LPGA posted a 10-under par 62 on Saturday to catch Pettersen and force the playoff.
Salas had four birdies and a lone bogey on the front nine for a three-under par 33. She started the back nine with an eagle on the par-4 No. 10 and then strung together five consecutive birdies from No. 12 to No. 16. She turned the back side in 29 and finished at 19-under par for the tournament.
Pettersen had eight birdies in the final round on Saturday, but also had three bogeys in her 67. Her round included a drive that caromed off the cart path and darted out of bounds on the par-5 No. 13 after a horn had gone off in her backswing.
She collected herself and made three birdies over her next four holes before adding a bogey at the last hole to give Salas a chance.
Both players headed to the 18th tee for the playoff. Salas in her first LPGA playoff was obviously outclassed and Pettersen made par on the first playoff hole to win the LPGA Lotte Championship.
This was LPGA win No. 11 for Pettersen. The ten-year veteran won two events at the end of 2012 and seems to have a renewed energy in her golf game this season. She also won earlier this year on the Ladies European Tour in China.
First round leader Ariya Jutanugarn recovered nicely after her second round 75 to shoot 68-66 over the last two rounds to collect $113,000 for third place and possibly earn a spot on the LPGA Tour for the rest of 2013.
Inbee Park shot 67-67 to finish in a tie for fourth place and will retain her No. 1 world ranking. No. 2 Stacy Lewis finished at 10-under par in a tie for ninth spot.
15-year-old New Zealander, Lydia Ko continues to impress golf fans. She had another strong finish shooting 71-71-70-66 and finishing at 10-under par for T-9.
