Tiger Woods Is Trunk Slammin' at Torrey Pines

Although Tiger Woods has won seven Farmers Insurance Opens at Torrey Pines plus the 2008 U.S. Open, he missed the 54-hole cut this year.

Woods had posted an even-par 72 in the first round on Thursday at the difficult South Course. On Friday he did not take advantage of the easier North Course and only finished with a one-under par 71.

The golf gods that watch over Torrey Pines finally put an end to his phenomenal run of spectacular play at one of the world’s best golf courses. Woods has played in 13 Farmers Insurance Opens in his professional career and finished outside the top-10 only once.

He started his third round on No. 10 and posted three birdies and two bogeys, getting to one-under par through his first eight holes. The problems began at the par-5 No. 18. The same hole that has been the site of so many victorious fist pumps for Woods.

On Saturday, Woods suddenly turned into a 10-handicapper at No. 18. The first double-bogey was immediately followed by his second double-bogey of the day at No. 1.  Five consecutive bogeys at Nos. 2-6 left him at eight-over par for his round through 15 holes.

Woods did manage a birdie at No. 16 and made pars at Nos. 17 and 18 for a seven-over par 79. It was the worst round of his career on a course on which he has experienced the absolute highs the game of golf has to offer.

Did I mention, the golf gods giveth and the golf gods taketh away?

This is the first time Woods has played a competitive round since losing a playoff to Zach Johnson in the Northwestern World Challenge in early December.

It will not count as a missed cut on the official statistics as he made the 36-hole cut, but it is definitely puzzling compared to the past success Woods has experienced at Torrey Pines.

The good news is that he will have an extra day to prepare for his next start in Dubai. Rory McIlroy and other top European Tour players will be in the field at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic that begins on Thursday.
