Tiger Woods made his 2013 PGA Tour debut by winning the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, which he has won six times previous on this same golf course.
Woods also won the 2008 U.S. Open, his last major victory, here. Tiger likes Torrey Pines. With this win he will set another record with eight PGA Tour wins on the same golf course.
He opened with a 68 on Thursday on the more difficult South Course. He turned in a solid round, but left two or three shots on the course over the last five holes.
Tiger took control of the tournament on Friday with a seven-under par 65 on the easier North Course. His round included four birdies and one bogey on the front nine followed by two birdies and an eagle on No. 18.
A heavy marine layer rolled in from the Pacific and prevented play on Saturday. Tournament officials resumed third round play on Sunday morning. Woods posted a three-under par 69, but bogeyed the 18th hole at Torrey Pines for the first time ever.
Play continued until dark on Sunday. Tiger made it through seven holes and added three more birdies to his total score before play was halted. At 17-under par he led Brandt Snedeker and Nick Watney by six shots with just eleven holes left to play.
Final round play was resumed at 2:10 PM ET on Monday. Temperatures were cool and a strong breeze was blowing across the course making playing conditions somewhat more difficult.
Although Woods hit a few wayward shots in his first couple holes he managed to squeeze out pars just as the old Tiger would have done and his lead grew to seven shots after the 11 holes.
The highlight of the week might have been his sand shot from the left bunker on No. 11. Tiger pulled his second shot into the back of the bunker and was forced to stand with his left foot in the sand and his right foot stretched out behind him outside of the bunker. This was typical Tiger Woods, manufactured stance, bad lie in the sand, long bunker shot and he knocked it stiff for a tap-in par.
A birdie at the par-5 No. 13, but a bogey at No. 14 kept the lead at seven shots.
At No. 15 Woods hit another foul ball that found a hazard 50 yards left of the intended fairway. After a penalty drop he smashed a draw with a fairway wood just short of the green but failed to get it up and down. He had to settle for double-bogey due to a very poor drive. His lead fell to five shots with three holes left to play.
A par at No. 16 but another bogey at No. 17 cut his lead to four shots heading to the last tee.
He was able to handle the last hole without anymore damage and won by four shots at 14-under par.
Tiger was sending a message through the first three rounds with his dominance. His four-hole stretch on Nos. 14-17 of four-over par in the final round on Monday still leaves some questions to be answered for Woods.
2012 Farmers Insurance Open Champion Brandt Snedeker posted 69 for the final round and finished in a tie with Josh Teater for runner-up at 10-under par.
Tiger missed the cut last week in Abu Dhabi but was able to bounce back for the win this week.
Every time that Tiger Woods has won the Masters, he has won at least one PGA Tour event prior to heading to Augusta.
