The USGA will hold the U.S. Senior Open at Oak Tree Golf Club in Edmond, Oklahoma just outside of Oklahoma City. Kenny Perry will defend and the 2013 Charles Schwab Cup Champion is having another good season this year.
The U.S. Senior Open is the fourth major of the season on the Champions Tour with the fifth and final major of the year, the Senior Open Championship to be held at Porthcawl Golf Club in Wales, two weeks hence.
Perry won the first major of the year at the Tradition, and Colin Montgomerie won his first major championship at the Senior PGA Championship at Benton Harbor, Michigan.
2014 Charles Schwab Cup points leader, Bernhard Langer won the Senior Players at Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh two weeks ago and opened up a 900-point lead over Jay Haas in the cup race.
Fred Couples will still be out of action tending to his sore back, but the rest of the top players on the Champions Tour will be in the field this week.
Scott Verplank will be making his Champions Tour debut at Oak Tree and is a member of the club. He has intimate knowledge of the course and also won the 1984 U.S. Amateur here.
Bob Tway is also an Oak Tree member and has to be a favorite to win this week.
Oak Tree is a par-71, can be stretched to 7,400 yards and was designed by Pete Dye. Wind is always a factor in Oklahoma and a player must be able to flight his ball to do well here.
In addition to the 1984 U.S. Amateur, Oak Tree also hosted the 1988 PGA Championship won by Jeff Sluman and Jay Haas triumphed in the 2006 Senior PGA here.
With just one more major championship remaining this season to earn double Charles Schwab Cup points, every point is critical this week and at the Senior Open Championship for anyone trying to catch Langer.
Montgomerie grew up playing in the wind in Scotland and should do well at Oak Tree. If he could finish high up the leaderboard this week and again at the Senior Open Championship in Wales, he could make a big move up the Charles Schwab Cup standings and challenge Langer.
With the win at the Tradition, Kenny Perry is also in position to repeat as Charles Schwab Cup winner if he could put together two good weeks in these two major championships.
If Langer plays well in the next two tournaments, he will be difficult to catch.
This is a critical stretch of golf for the old guys. It will be interesting to see who can survive the heat, wind and pressure to hold the U.S. Senior Open trophy on Sunday evening.
