Fifty-year-old Vijay Singh gave Aussie golf fans some excitement at Royal Melbourne on Saturday in the Talisker Masters. He posted an eight-under par 63 for his third round. At ten-under par, he is tied with three other players for second, but is still four shots behind the leader, Adam Scott.
Scott posted yet another solid round of five-under par 66. Added to his first two rounds of 67-66, he is the clear leader at 14-under par. He won last week at the Australian PGA Championship and is making his first return to Australia since his win at the 2013 Masters.
His third-round 66 included five birdies on the front nine for a 30. Bogeys at Nos. 11 and 12 followed by birdies at Nos. 15 and 17 gave him an even-par 36 on the back nine.
Singh made four birdies in his first five holes before making a bogey at No. 9 for a front nine of three-under par 32. He bounced back quickly with a birdie at No. 10. An eagle-three at the par-5 No. 15 sandwiched between birdies at Nos. 14 and 16 got him to five-under par 31 for the back nine and ten-under par for the tournament.
Singh had an eventful 2013. He was forced to address accusations of performance enhancing drug use early in the year and a possible suspension by the PGA Tour. The suspension was eventually reversed when Deer Antler Spray was removed from the prohibited use list.
He split playing time between the Champions Tour and the PGA Tour. This round over one of the best golf courses in the world proves that he still has the game to compete with the young guys.
Matthew Griffin, Nick Cullen and rookie Nathan Holman are also tied with Singh at ten-under par. Holman is making just his fifth start as a professional. He managed to post a respectable one-under par 70 while paired with the No. 2 player in the world for the third round.
The final round will conclude Sunday at Royal Melbourne and we can expect Adam Scott to be hoisting his fourth trophy of the year.
