Webb Simpson is shooting very low scores this week at the TPC Summerlin Golf Course in Las Vegas. He posted a seven-under par 64 on Thursday and followed up with an eight-under par 63 on Friday.
His two-day total of 15-under par puts him four shots ahead of his nearest competitors. John Senden, Jeff Overton, Chesson Hadley, J.J. Henry and Jason Bohn are all at 11-under par and hoping Simpson stumbles on the weekend.
Henry flirted with a 59 in his first round on Thursday. He carded five birdies and an eagle for a front nine seven-under par 28. He added four more birdies on the back nine for a 11-under par 60.
Defending champion Ryan Moore and Russell Knox are one more shot back at ten-under par. Ryo Ishikawa, Like Guthrie, Brian Stuard and Stephan Ames round out the top-10 at nine-under par.
TPC Summerlin normally yields low scores in the Shriners Hospital for Children Open, but the scoring is extremely low this year. Ryan Moore won last year with a total of 24-under par. Marc Turnesa holds the tournament record at 25-under par.
The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open is the second tournament of the 2014 PGA Tour season. This is the first year this event is offering FedEx Cup points. A win here also earns a trip to Augusta and a spot in the 2014 Masters.
Simpson did not have a win in 2013, but was runner-up at Hilton Head. He had five top-10 finishes, earned $2.9 million for the year and finished No. 17 in the FedEx Cup standings. He won the 2012 U.S. Open at Olympic Club and has two other PGA Tour career wins.
Chesson Hadley may be someone to watch this weekend. This is just his fourth start on the PGA Tour. He had a very good year on the Web.com Tour and won the Web.com Tour Championship in September.
Ishikawa struggled in 2013 and was forced to earn his 2014 tour card via the Web.com Tour Finals.
Russel Knox split the 2013 season on both the Web.com and the PGA Tours. He earned full exemption for this year and does have a Web.com Tour win on his resume.
Luke Guthrie had two wins on the 2012 Web.com Tour and finished No. 72 on the 2013 PGA Tour. He is a long-hitter that can go low in Las Vegas if his putter cooperates.
There is a great mixture of veterans and young players at the top of the Shriners Hospitals for Children leaderboard.
Webb Simpson appears to be in complete control with just 36 holes to play.
