When Will Lee Westwood Win a Major?

Lee Westwood has been a professional golfer for 20 years.  He has won 22 tournaments on the European Tour and twice on the PGA Tour. He was ranked No. 1 on the Official World Golf Rankings for 22 weeks, but has never won a major title.

Westwood went through a period in his career from which most players never recover. After winning the European Tour’s Order of Merit in 2000 Lee took some time away from the game and decided to change his swing with David Leadbetter. These proved to be fatal for his game.  He fell well down in the OWGR and struggled to regain his form for over six years.

Lee finally recaptured his world class golf game in 2007 and has been a factor on the world golf scene since then.

For several years Lee has traveled around the world playing minor events for large appearance fees. Weaker fields have allowed him to pick up sanctioned wins on minor tours but the travel has hurt his performance in big events. Westwood announced earlier this year that he would be taking up residence in the United States to better prepare for major championships.

In 2012, he accepted membership to the PGA Tour and has been playing more in the U. S.  With five top-10 finishes and over $1.7 million in earnings he has had a successful year in the states.

His best finish in the majors this year was a T-3 at the 2012 Masters. He was T-10 at the U. S. Open, T-45 at the Open Championship and missed the cut at the PGA. Still, it is just another year with no majors.

A sure sign that Westwood is very frustrated he fired his coach and caddy immediately after his missed cut at the PGA. He could still have a very successful year with a win or two in the playoffs.  Winning the FedEx Cup itself would not replace a major trophy but would reinstate Lee as a force in professional golf and might just give his confidence a boost heading into next year.

The time is now for Lee Westwood.  He is 39 years old and does not want to end his career with zero major titles on his resume’.
