Stacy Lewis shot two-under par 70 in her first two competitive rounds as the world No. 1 ranked woman golfer at the Kia Classic. She is four shots behind the leader Beatriz Recari.
This is the fourth year for the Kia Classic on the LPGA Tour schedule and it is played over the 6,592 yard, par 72, Aviara Golf Club in Carlsbad, California.
This is also the last tune-up for the LPGA Tour players before their first major tournament of the year at the Kraft Nabisco Championship in two weeks.
Lewis claimed the No. 1 spot on the Rolex Rankings last week with her win at the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup in Phoenix. She holds a slim margin over Tseng and 2012 U.S. Women’s Open Champion, Na Yeon Choi.
The Founders Cup was her second consecutive win this year and sixth in the last 11 months. Her first win of 2013 came at the HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore.
Lewis was named the LPGA Player of the Year last year and became the first American to win that honor since Beth Daniel in 1994.
She won the 2011 Kraft Nabisco Championship for her first official LPGA Tour title and she will be looking to add a second major title in two weeks at Rancho Mirage.
Paula Creamer shot 69-67 and is only one shot off the pace at seven-under par. Creamer has battled injury the past two years, but seems to be regaining form.
Her last win came at the 2010 U.S. Women’s Open. This is her fourth start of 2013. Creamer’s best finish thus far was a third place finish at the HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore a week after being involved in a car accident in Thailand.
Defending champion, Yani Tseng was forced to withdraw after missing her tee time for the Pro-Am on Wednesday.
Americans, Christie Kerr and first round leader, Jane Park are two shots behind the leader at six-under par.
Michelle Wie’s problems continue. She recorded 74-74 for four-over par aggregate and will miss the cut this week.
Lexi Thompson posted 75-72 three-over par to make the cut on the number and will play the weekend at the Kia Classic.
