Zach Johnson turned in a nearly perfect six-under par 65 on Monday to win the BMW Championship. Rain had washed out play on Sunday and the PGA Toru was forced to hold a Monday finish at the BNW Championship on the north side of Chicago.
Johnson collects the $1.4 million first place check and moves to fourth in the FedEx Cup standings heading to the Tour Championship this week at East Lake in Atlanta.
Johnson began the day three shots behind the leader Jim Furyk. Furyk shot an even-par 71 and finished in third place. This was the sixth time in the past two years Furyk has held the 54-hole lead and failed to win the tournament.
Johnson made three birdies on the front nine to catch the leaders. Heading to the 16th tee he was tied with Furyk and Nick Watney for the lead at 14-under par. Birdies at Nos. 16 and 17 sealed the deal and gave him his first win of the year.
Watney, who started the tournament at No. 34 on the FedEx Cup standings, held the clubhouse lead and posted the best round of the day. His seven-under par 64 earned him $864,000, moved him to No. 12 in the FedEx Cup and qualified him for the Tour Championship.
Johnson has been red hot over the past two months. In his last seven starts he has six top-10 finishes. He has now earned a total of $3.8 million in 2013 and has moved to No. 12 in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Four players, Jason Day, Steve Stricker, Hunter Mahan and Luke Donald finished tied for fourth place.
Donald began the tournament at No. 54 in the FedEx Cup standings and needed the strong performance to finish No. 29, just inside the top 30.
Even though Tiger Woods finished T-11 at the BMW Championship, he jumped over Henrik Stenson and regained the top spot in the FedEx Cup standings.
Woods, Stenson, Adam Scott, Johnson and Matt Kuchar hold the top five spots in the FedEx Cup heading to East Lake and have the best odds of winning the $10 million FedEx Cup.
Stenson, Furyk, Stricker and Johnson have been playing the best golf on the PGA Tour over the past two months.
Can one of them slip past Tiger Woods to win the big check next week at the Tour Championship?
