There is still about two and a half weeks left of spring for every team not named the Dodgers or Diamondbacks and there are some young players making noise. The problem is that you can’t bring young stud up or give someone a new job without making another move, and so there could be some late spring trades going on. Here are ten players who could be traded for one reason or another.
Brandon McCarthy or Trevor Cahill - Arizona Diamondbacks
Both at one point started an opening day for the Oakland Athletics and ended up in Arizona, and neither has quite live up to what the Diamondbacks expectations. With the trades in the offseason of Ian Kennedy and Tyler Skaggs it seemed like both of their jobs were safe. Not so fast. Starting pitching prospect Archie Bradley has walked into spring training and put one of their jobs in doubt, and if he can continue to dazzle the Diamondbacks upper management it could mean the end of the road for one of these veteran right handers.
Andre Ethier or Matt Kemp - Los Angeles Dodgers
It’s been no secret that the Dodgers were in talks to move one of these two this past offseason. The emergence of Yasiel Puig into the limelight has caused a logjam in the outfield for the team, and with Carl Crawford holding down the role of leadoff hitter for the team it is likely one of these two that could be traded. The interesting thing about these two is a younger star is not forcing them out in spring (although it is Puig’s breakout that caused this), but it could be the performance or lack thereof of Kemp that causes the Dodgers to finally pull the trigger. If over the last two weeks, and the first two games of the season, Kemp can prove he is healthy and has the same abilities he did before the injury it is likely that the Dodgers will be forced to make a move. The move could be trading Ethier to keep Kemp with the team because of his MVP abilities or it could be to trade Kemp away for a big return to stock a thin minor league system.
Jon Jay And Pete Kozma - St. Louis Cardinals
Probably the only reason these two haven’t already been traded is because of the lack of market for both of them. As spring wears on, though, and players succumb to injury it would be no surprise if both of these guys were traded. For Jay it was the acquisition of Peter Bourjos that signaled the end for him in St. Louis, and the fact that he has only ever played center field in the majors makes him less valuable as a backup than teammate Shane Robinson. The same can be said for Kozma. He has lost his job to the free agent signing of Jhonny Peralta and while he too has only played one position while teammate Daniel Descalso can play multiple positions on the infield making him a more valuable commodity. The Cardinals have depth at nearly every position this season and that makes both of them disposable if the team gets an offer they like.
Sergio Santos - Toronto Blue Jays
The Jays have found a capable closer in Casey Janssen and have Brett Cecil and Steve Delabar who have proven to be capable setup men during Santos’ struggles with injuries. That already led to Santos’ name being thrown around in trades all winter long and now that spring is coming to a closer there could be a team in enough bullpen trouble that they will finally present the Jays with an offer that they like enough to pull the trigger.
Tom Wilhelmsen - Seattle Mariners
With injuries in the rotation the Mariners could use a capable bottom of the rotation starter for at least the first month of the season. This is where Wilhelmsen’s positive showing so far this spring could help as he has proven to be an effective closer in the past and there are a few teams out there who could still use a guy who has closer potential, but the problem is going to be getting back the piece the Mariners need to be a stop-gap in the rotation until Taijuan Walker and Hisashi Iwakuma can get healthy.
Adam Dunn - Chicago White Sox
I wouldn’t call Jose Abreu’s spring so far amazing, but it has been compared to Dunn’s. That along with other factors such as his expiring contract and Paul Konerko’s return to the team makes him dispensable. At this point it is going to be hard for the White Sox to get anything decent in return for the once great slugger and that is probably the only reason he is still a member of the team. There are teams out there, though, who could use his power potential to help their team from the designated hitter position so as we get close to the end of spring there could become a market for his raw power ability.
Lonnie Chisenhall - Cleveland Indians
The Indians are experimenting with Carlos Santana at third base. Right now it just seems to be just that, an experiment, but if this works out over the next two weeks and he looks competent it could mean the end for Chisenhall in an Indians uniform. Much like the issue with Kozma and Jay he is a one position guy right now and his primary competition for the backup role, Mike Aviles, can play all over the field. This is a big if, because the Santana experiment has barely just began, but if it is and there is a team with any interest in Chisenhall he will be gone and fast.
