2014 Fantasy Baseball: Finding Home Runs In The Later Rounds

Most fantasy baseball owners consider Home Runs the most important offensive category. Personally, I believe that is false, but as the draft goes on, consistent Home Runs can be hard to come by. The usual case will be Home Runs along with a lower average and an obscene amount of strikeouts. If you’re in a league that counts strikeouts like me, you could be in trouble. I am going to look at a few guys being drafted in later rounds, who could provide Home Runs along with a respectable average.

Evan Gattis, Catcher, Atlanta Braves

With Brian McCann no longer in town, Gattis will get a chance to be a full time starter. Last season Gattis put up 21 Home Runs despite playing just 105 games. With the ability to catch and play outfield, Gattis could find himself in the Braves lineup on a daily basis.

Rumors are now swirling that Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez, plans on batting Gattis in the clean-up spot. This likely means he will hit in between Freddie Freeman and Justin Upton, so one can expect him to see many pitches to hit. Gattis is currently going in rounds 16-18 in Mock Drafts.

Projected 2014 Statistics: .260 AVG, 65 Runs, 31 Home Runs, 80 RBI

Mark Teixeira, First Base, New York Yankees

Teixeira has potential to be the steal of every draft. Just two years ago, a healthy Teixeira was being drafted in the early rounds. A consistent 30 Home Run hitter throughout his career, Teixeira had a forgettable season in 2013, in which saw him sit out most of the year due to injuries.

This year, he claims to be healthy, and will likely find himself in the middle of the Yankee lineup once again. Currently being drafted in the 17-18 rounds in Mock Drafts, Teixeira is the steal of steals, especially if you want him as your starting first basemen, a position in which many overpay or reach for.

Projected 2014 Statistics: .245 AVG, 85 Runs, 35 Home Runs, 90 RBI

Josh Hamilton, Outfield, Los Angeles Angels

While Josh Hamilton is still a middle round player in most drafts and may not fit the later round tag, Hamilton has the potential to be a steal in his draft position. Coming off a huge contract, Hamilton disappointed everyone. It wasn’t completely his fault though, the Angels overall were a disappointment.

Once Hamilton started slow (and the Angels) it all went downhill. However, Hamilton finished strong and with Albert Pujols back, and David Freese now in town, Hamilton is primed for a huge year. As a middle round draftee, Hamilton could put up first round numbers like he did two years ago.

Projected 2014 Statistics: .280 AVG, 95 Runs, 40 Home Runs, 105 RBI
