5 MLB Managers on the Hot Seat

The MLB season is in full swing, and at this point teams are beginning to make a name for themselves to be proven contenders for October baseball.  In baseball anything can happen, and sometimes the teams with the high expectations falter.  Some managerial jobs come with more pressure than others as they are expected to lead their clubs to a World Series or at the very least a postseason appearance.  Here’s a look at five managers who are on the hot seat.

1. Terry Collins, New York Mets

Collins enters his fifth season as the Mets manager, and it’s been rather uneventful for Mets fans.  Granted this club is in a tough division with the NL favorite Washington Nationals.  Currently, the Mets are 30-26 and tied with the Nats for first place in the NL East.

In his previous four seasons, Collins has a career record of 304-344.  This year the Mets have been successful early and the return of Matt Harvey has been a huge boost for their already good rotation.  They have a solid lineup to accompany their pitching staff, but they have shown signs of life before, then struggled.

This is the final year of Collins’ contract and he has a lot to prove to return.  This roster is capable of making a Wild Card run, and being a dark horse in the division, but Collins has to keep them on track as they have to continue to play they way they have been through the first two months of the season.

2. John Gibbons, Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays have been expected to be serious contenders for a few seasons now, but this year they have a stellar roster.  The rotation took a hit when Marcus Stroman tore his ACL, but their lineup is full of heavy hitters capable of carrying the pitching staff.

The AL East is always considered to be a tough division with both the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox always vying for the postseason, but the Jays are sporting a roster capable of competing with the top dogs.

This is Gibbons eighth season with Toronto, and in his previous seven seasons has a record of 462-472.  The Jays are currently 26-30 and in third place of the AL East and four games out of the division behind the first place Yankees.

The Blue Jays entered the season with high expectations and so far haven’t quite lived up to them.  With the addition of All Star Josh Donaldson this is a fantastic lineup with a few power hitters, but it’s not transferring to wins and a winning record.

The season is still young, but the Jays have to step it up, otherwise Gibbons may not return.

3. Fredi Gonzalez, Atlanta Braves

Gonzalez is in his final year of his contract and is undoubtedly on the hot seat.  He oversaw one of the worst late season collapses in 2011, and the Braves have not been successful in the postseason with vast eliminations in 2012 and 2013.

Last season, Atlanta finished with a losing record, the first under Gonzalez, but the Braves seem to be in a rebuilding mode, building for the future with recent offseason trades.

This is Gonzalez’s fifth season with the Braves.  In his previous four full seasons with Atlanta, he has a record of 358-290.  Currently the Braves are 26-28 and in third place of the NL East, only three games behind the first-place Mets and Nationals.

The Braves are performing better than expected following a fire sale this offseason, but due to failure in October, Gonzalez continues to be on the hot seat as this franchise moves forward and makes changes.

4. Terry Francona, Cleveland Indians

Francona has had much success over his career as a manager, notably over his time with the Boston Red Sox.  This is his third year with the Cleveland Indians, a team with high expectations not only in the AL Central, but as a playoff contending team.

He has yet to have a losing record with Cleveland, however they have not made the postseason under Francona despite a strong showing in the regular season.

In his first two years as the Indians manager, Francona is 177-147.  So far this year, the Indians are 27-28, fourth in the Central and five games behind the surprisingly first place Minnesota Twins.

Cleveland has a phenomenal pitching staff led by Corey Kluber, but they haven’t quite put it all together as a whole.

Now, there are other changes that could be made first, for example bringing in a different hitting coach, etc, but if the trend continues Francona’s job could also be in jeopardy as this club has high expectations behind a solid roster.

5. Mike Scioscia, Los Angeles Angels

The Angels always seem to be favorites in the AL West, but have come up short in recent years.  Scioscia has been with the Halos for 16 years now and has always fielded a solid team and keep them in contention; however they have fallen short despite having some of baseball's finest players.

Currently the Angels are 28-27 and in third place of the AL West, five games behind the first place Houston Astros.

Scioscia has a 1359-1126 record in his 16 seasons with the Halos.

He’s had a lot of success including a World Series, but hasn’t done much since.
