The American League East is chalk full of talent. This division has been the best American League division in baseball for at least three years now and it doesn’t look like another division will be taking on that role anytime soon. As far as fantasy baseball is concerned there is a plethora of great fantasy value that could help lead your team to the promise land. Below is one player from each AL East team that is my pick for the biggest fantasy stud.
Dustin Pedroia, Boston Red Sox
Pedroia is being drafted as high as the first pick in the second round to as low as the last pick in the third. If you can get him with a third round pick you should be very happy with yourself. In 2012 Pedroia batted .301 with nine home runs, 84 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. His home run total dipped from the year before by six but his power is not what makes him lethal. His great base running skills and presence at the plate is what makes this guy such a valuable asset to have on your team. In keeper leagues you could see this guy being kept so if you have the chance to draft him in the third round do it!
Evan Longoria, Tampa Bay Rays
Longoria is being drafted around the same time as second baseman Pedroia. The only difference between these two is that Longo is a third baseman. His 2013 was not as good as Pedroia’s was but he still put up numbers to be drafted within the first four rounds. His .269 batting average was right around his career average which is .275 so you shouldn’t be worried there. His power also went up last season as he hit 32 home runs which is the highest total in a season for the 29 year-old. If you have the chance to get Longoria in the third round I say go for it. If he is still available in the fourth get him no matter what. Although I do believe he will have a good year, I do not believe that he is worth using a first (obviously) or a second round pick on him.
Adam Jones, Baltimore Orioles
Jones is a top twenty worth fantasy asset and should be for at least two more years. He has proven time and time again that he can handle the big stage and can also handle helping your fantasy team in great ways. Last season Jones hit a career high 33 home runs to go with a career high 108 RBIs. I guess you could say it was a breakout season for the 29 year-old star. He’s also good for about 15 stolen bases throughout the season as well. If you are in a keeper league the likelihood of him being kept is very high but if he is not being kept or you are doing a standard draft look to draft this guy in the second round. Hold off on the first round as there is more value to be had.
Jacoby Ellsbury, New York Yankees
Soon after bringing a championship to the great state of Massachusetts Ellsbury decided to take his talents to the Bronx. I guess the saying really is true. Die a legend or live long enough to see yourself become a villain. I am guessing he will not be receiving a warm greeting when he returns to Fenway park. Either way back to the fantasy aspect of things! After a disappointing 2012 season Ellsbury fell very far down the list of players to draft but has regained his composure after his 2013 campaign. He hit nine home runs in 2013 but you could see that number reach upwards of 15 since he will be playing at Yankee stadium. He’s also good for at least 40 stolen bases if he’s healthy. In 2013 he had 52 swipes which led the league. The fact that he can hit for average and steal bases makes him a top ten commodity that you shouldn’t pass up on.
Edwin Encarnacion, Toronto Blue Jays
Here we have another top ten asset who has never been taken any lower than the 20th pick in a single mock draft that I have done. This guy has some of the best power in all of baseball and should be 100 percent healthy coming into the season. In 2013 he hit 36 homers with 104 RBIs. These numbers dipped from last season but not in a fashion that would have you worried about his future. Encarnacion is a second round pick who could help bring your team all the way to the ship. He’s got a great batters eye with a .370 OBP and can swing it with the best of them. If you’re looking for guys that are going to have a down year you’re looking in the wrong spot with this one.
