We are currently looking directly, smack dab in the face of one of the most exciting endings to a MLB season in the recent history of the sport. Currently there are eight American League teams still in the race with only four days remaining in the regular season.
Saturday gave us a whole lot of intrigue. The Oakland Athletics were down by two runs with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning before Josh Donaldson nailed a two-run homer to dead center to tie the game. This came immediately before Brandon Moss nailed a three-run blast over the right field fence for the homestanding A’s, giving them a much needed and equally improbable win.
Meanwhile, the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels were rained out, which means they will play a doubleheader today in Arlington.
In the AL Central, the Chicago White Sox seem intent on giving the division away after losing for the eighth time in 10 games. The Detroit Tigers hold a two game lead with four remaining for both clubs. However, it is important to remember that these two teams still have one possible game remaining against another after rain postponed a game between them earlier in the season.
The New York Yankees lost 3-2 to the Toronto Blue Jays, a game that might go a long way in determining the outcome of the AL East.
Let’s take a look a where each team and race stands with only four days remaining in the regular season.
AL East | New York Yankees | 91-67 | - |
| Baltimore Orioles | 91-67 | - |
| Tampa Bay Rays | 87-71 | 4 |
AL Central | Detroit Tigers | 85-73 | - |
| Chicago White Sox | 83-75 | 2 |
AL West | Texas Rangers | 92-65 | - |
| Oakland Athletics | 90-68 | 2.5 |
| Los Angeles Angels | 87-70 | 5 |
AL Wildcard (Two Teams Make it) | Baltimore Orioles | 91-67 | - |
| Oakland Athletics | 90-68 | -/1 |
| Los Angeles Angels | 87-70 | 2.5 |
| Tampa Bay Rays | 87-71 | 3 |
Best Record/Homefield | Texas Rangers | 92-65 | - |
| New York Yankees | 91-67 | 1.5 |
| Baltimore Orioles | 91-67 | 1.5 |
| Oakland Athletics | 90-68 | 2.5 |
| Los Angeles Angels | 87-70 | 5 |
Now that the standings are "settled," at least in this article. Lets take a gander at what Sunday has to offer.
-
- Yankees and Orioles both hold a 1 game lead over the Oakland Athletics for the #1 wildcard spot and a 3.5 game lead over the Los Angeles Angels for the final playoff spot. A win by each of those teams coupled with a Rangers sweep of Los Angeles would punch their tickets to the postseason.
-
- Tampa Bay needs to win out and have both Baltimore and New York lose out in order to capture the AL East. The Rays also need to win out and have Oakland lose three of their final four in order to guarantee a one-game playoff against the Athletics on Thursday.
-
- Detroit sits two games ahead of Chicago in the AL Central. Detroit wins three of their final four and the division is theirs as long as Chicago doesn't win out. Remember, they had a game postponed due to rain. So, if the two teams are within one game on Wednesday, there will be a one-game playoff for the division.
-
- Texas holds a 2.5 game lead over Oakland. They have a double-header today against Los Angeles. Texas sweeps the two games against the Angels and Oakland loses, the Rangers clinch the AL West.
-
- Oakland is one game behind Baltimore for the first wildcard spot and 2.5 games ahead of Los Angeles for the final wildcard spot. An Oakland win against Seattle coupled with a Rangers sweep of Los Angeles, and the Athletics clinch a playoff spot.
-
- If Oakland were to win Sunday and Texas gets swept they would go into the final three game set against Texas in Oakland down by a single game.
-
- Meanwhile, the Angels need to win their final five and have Oakland lose two games in order to setup a one-game wildcard playoff on Thursday in Oakland.
-
- Los Angeles CANNOT win the AL West.
-
Okay, do you have that all?
